Coming from a home where my parents had only very few friends and no business contacts at all I learned very fast that you can be excellent in what you are doing, but without a mentor or connections it is almost impossible to get on the top.
When I was IFBB Fitness World Champion ( and we have a lot of World Champions in Germany) I started to talk to really everybody who was interested in Health and Fitness. By accident I also met the publisher Mr Albert Busek 6 months before the World Championship from our biggest fitness magazine “Sport Revue” who was a relatively cold business person. With my bubbly way I convinced him to post little pics of me in his magazine and that I would send him over my professional pics – I was paying for the photographer myself.
People loved this little photos of me in Sport Revue and I didn’t see any money out of that. After winning in November 1986 I had already my name out there, fitness fans new me for my upbeat nature. And then came the turning point: huge posters and big pics in the Sport Revue made me famous European wide over night after winning the title. For everybody it looked like my fame came over night – NO, IT DIDN’T. It was constant networking in advance for years.
I am thinking that NETWORKING is a good topic for my Radio Show to emphasize the importance of networking!
